Off the Grid: Life On The Mesa

"...Twenty-Five miles from town, a million miles from mainstream society, a loose-knit community of eco-pioneers, teenage runaways, war veterans and drop-outs, live on the fringe and off the grid, struggling to survive with little food, less water and no electricity, as they cling to their unique vision of the American dream…"

Off the Grid: Life On The Mesa - Watch the Documentary Film for Free Watch Free Documentaries Online SnagFilms

If you read through the comments, several people mentioned that the documentary only looked at a small portion of the mesa. According to those commentators there are about 1400 residents of the Mesa, most of them living green, environmentally conscious lives.

As a side note, the term, "off the grid," originally referred to living without public utilities such as water and electricity. Many of the negative comments were bashing the community because they still rely on society for many necessities.

What is SnagFilms?

My answer is simple. "More FREE TV!"

SnagFilms tells us they are "...committed to finding the world‘s most compelling documentaries, whether from established heavyweights or first-time filmmakers, and making them available to the wide audience these titles deserve.

SnagFilms.com is a website where you can watch full-length documentary films for free, but we’re also a platform that lets you “snag” a film and put it anywhere on the web. With a rapidly-growing library of thousands of films, each individually selected by our industry expert curators, you’re bound to find films that resonate with your interests. We make it easy for you to find a film that shines a light on a cause you care about. You can then open a virtual movie theater on any website, so any one can watch your favorite SnagFilms for free.

We are also bringing these great films to audiences everywhere through distribution partners large and small – look for our logo around the web as your indication of highest quality professional filmmaking. We are also bringing our library to the full array of devices (check out our free iPad application, for example) and a range of With an increasing array of devices and platforms including cable VOD and iTunes, our extensive library continues to be easily accessible for audiences anywhere, any time.

Additionally, we are excited to announce that this summer SnagFilms, for the first time ever, will be offering narrative fictional films across all platforms.

By combining SnagFilms' innovative platform of free films, widget sharing and filmanthropy, additional availability via transactional platforms, and indieWIRE's iconic heritage, journalistic excellence, and minute to minute breaking news coverage, we are proud to support and strengthen the independent film community.

SnagFilms can be summed up in four words: Find. Watch. Snag. Support.

Find.

Whether using our custom search tools, browsing by topic, or tuning into one of the great channels provided by our partners, with a few clicks you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for.

Watch.

By streaming films worldwide, on-demand, 24x7 and with no software installation or downloading required, we have radically expanded the audience for independent films. All you need is a decent broadband connection. Just click play, go full-screen, and lean back and enjoy our films. And a special collection of newly-released titles are available on our channels on Comcast and FiOS VOD, and iTunes.

Snag.

Widgets let you take your favorite SnagFilms with you wherever you like to go online. Open a virtual movie theater right in your webpage, blog, Facebook or MySpace page, or just about any other place online you can think of.

Support.

At their best, documentaries don‘t merely entertain us, they engage and inspire us to take action. We provide a link for you on each film page to get involved with the film's cause - whether that be donating or finding a place to volunteer - enabling you to take part immediately. And just by embedding our widgets, you’ve donated your pixels and helped support independent film.

If you’re a filmmaker, producer, or a distributor with documentaries in need of distribution, please reach out to submissions@snagfilms.com"

No service? No signal? Out of range? There's a solution!

photo lifted from dreamtimes

LifeHacker is another one of my go to websites. They constantly post tips and tricks on all kinds of subjects, from the kitchen to mobile technology. The writers at LifeHacker dumb down their directions for people like me, who only want to know how (the easy way) without caring about the why and what if.

Recently, Lifehacker contributor Alan Henry shared a method which makes it possible to use your iOS or Android phone even when out of range! Check it out!

You can check an area's signal with help from Deadzones.com

This could be you! (or me) CAUTION! The F bomb is dropped, frequently!!!

An AWESOME Boon Docking/Full-timin' RV Resource

I met Jen and Johnny (aka Hitek Homeless) at the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in Quartzsite this past January. I may be their biggest fan (and quite possibly a harmless stalker)

One of the many things I love about this couple is their willingness to share information. They've created a couple of fantastic websites that do just that.

Their blog documents their travels with pictures and descriptions of hikes, campsites, and other aspects that may be of interest to travelers of all modes. It also has a page dedicated to work camping resources. Bookmark this page! It lists many resources available with a single click and it has recently been updated.

They also have a wonderful gallery of pictures, taken at their many camp sites, hiking and caving expeditions. I'd be hard pressed to pick my favorite, but I really enjoyed the most recent

Jen and Johnny are also created FreeCampsites.net. The website incorporates an interactive map of boon docking campsites, which is easily navigated. All of the listed sites have been utilized by Jen and Johnny or contributors. The campsites are rated and any difficulties getting there are noted and discussed. The website is updated regularly as they travel throughout the United States.

They provide a discussion forum to discuss all aspects of RV living and boon docking.

You can stalk follow them on FaceBook, for more frequent updates. If you have a question about a campsite or area they're happy to provide answers.

As a sidenote, if you have the opportunity to camp with these wanderers, the entertainment value, alone, is priceless!

Thanks, you guys, for providing such awesome resources and not having me arrested for stalking! I'm looking forward to the next time!
